      “I love you.”

Hikari blushed as she remembered Jun’s words. She was his girlfriend for five months now and the guy had been saying it at almost every chance he could. It made her feel giddy inside, though not in a bad way. Hikari wouldn’t deny it. She loved Jun to death. Even when he teased her to no end, she still loved him. It was just another part that made him the kind of guy he was.

The autumn sun was shining gently as she continued to think about her partner. It was almost as if it was trying to lull her to sleep. Leaning against her lounge chair, Hikari let her eyes close shut and thought back to the day when it all started.

It was a hot summer day, and Hikari and Jun were sitting on Hikari’s porch as they ate popsicles in silence. It was too hot to do anything much, and they had run out of water balloons to play with a few days prior.

“It’s sooo hot right now,” Jun complained. He took a bite from his popsicle and mumbled something incoherent. His face was all red, and Hikari wondered if it was just from all the heat.

“If you need something Jun, just ask,” she said. The guy in question wasn’t the type to hide what he felt, so it was kind of odd for him to be mumbling. Oh well. It was too hot to think anyways, so Hikari went back to licking her own popsicle.

No longer was it a comfortable silence. Rather, it had turned into an awkward type of anticipation as Jun tried to say something and Hikari patiently waited. Minutes passed and not a word was uttered between them. Well, that was until Jun started to cough harshly.

Immediately, Hikari was patting and rubbing his back with her free hand. “Idiot, how do you choke on a popsicle?” She sighed and gave a half-hearted smile. Jun was a little immature sometimes, but it was cute.

Soon, he stopped coughing and muttered a small “thank you” to his childhood friend. Fumbling with his popsicle, he bit off the last part and quickly turned it over to look for any indication of writing.

“Did you get anything?” Hikari asked. Her view was somewhat obscured by Jun’s turned body, so she couldn’t see for herself. When she heard him sigh, she thought it had been another bust. They had been eating a lot of popsicles lately in hopes to find the words “WINNER” written on of them. Apparently there was some sort of prize Jun wanted to get from it, and Hikari was just helping him out. But so far, all of the popsicles had a simple star indicating a bust.

Suddenly, Jun swiftly turned around and stared at Hikari intensely. “I love you.” Then, he leaned in close and placed a swift and featherlight kiss on the girl’s lips before running to the tree he often used to climb up to reach her bedroom porch. He gave her one last smirk and shouted, “I’m fining you a million dollars if you’re late!” And with that, he was quickly climbing down and headed off to the forest that surrounded their little town.

On the other hand, Hikari had been stunned ever since Jun turned to face her. There was a look in his eyes that she had never noticed before, and it made her heart beat just a little bit faster. When he finally spoke, it almost felt like her heart was going to explode. She knew that her face was redder than a tomato, but the shock and embarrassment did well to divert her attention elsewhere. Hikari could only watch as Jun jumped down and started to run away. His words had barely registered in her mind. Their meaning came moments after, and soon she was stumbling to meet Jun at their spot in the forest. She didn’t even bother to look at the popsicle stick he left behind because she knew. She knew that it said “WINNER” right across the tip.

As Hikari ran through her house and outside go see Jun, she thought back to his words when they had first started their challenge. Jun had told her that if he won, he would tell her something important, though she had honestly forgotten about that until that moment. Her heart was racing, her mind was in a jumble. All that mattered right now was finding the guy and telling him her answer.

The few minutes it took to get to the forest felt like forever. Her face was flushed, sweat beads were starting to form on her forehead. But the sight of Jun waiting for her next to the lake made it all worth it.

“I-” She caught her breath, still not quite ready to speak. “I love you too!”

“Idiot. You didn’t have to try so hard. Hey-!”

Hikari laid on the ground with Jun after tackling him in a flying bear hug. It seemed so natural, so right. He was her best friend. Now, he was her lover as well. She giggled at the thought and felt his arms wrap around her waist.

“Hikari Platinum, I love you. And I always will.”

“Kari, you awake?” an all too familiar voice said, waking Hikari up from her dream. Their body was pressed up close to hers as they laid on the couch with her.

“Oh, hey, Jun,” she groggily replied. After her confession Hikari had never said the three words again. Part of it was because she felt a little shy to do it again after blurting it out like that; part of was because she felt like Jun knew it as well. She had a gut feeling that he said it to make her blush or get some alike reaction.

Placing a small kiss on her head, Jun combed his fingers through the girl’s hair. “Did you sleep well?” he asked. To be truthful, he had been watching her ever since she fell asleep. He had just excused himself to get the both of them some drinks for the hot weather when he came back to find her falling asleep. Hikari had just returned from another champion business trip, so she must have been tired.

“Yeah. It’s nice being home again.” The girl hadn’t gotten much sleep in her hotel bedroom. Everything seemed too foreign- the place, the bed, the scent. Being in Sinnoh calmed her. After all, Jun was there in not but a moment’s reach.

Sleep was still beckoning for her despite her short nap. Yawning, Hikari buried herself in Jun’s chest and let herself fall asleep to the rhythm of his heart. She would never get tired of hearing it. After all, it proved that every waking moment was truly reality- not some fading dream.

On the summer afternoon, a boy and a girl slept underneath a shaded canopy in each other’s arms. Their fingers were intertwined, right ring fingers displaying a shiny metal band. It symbolized a silent promise that would never be broken- one that couldn’t be shattered, even by death.
// So yeah. I wrote something after a million years. Anywho, hope you like and your feels were stirred up well because whoops, there's more headed your way~ c: //

"Although you may not hear it, I like you a lot. Maybe I'm just a little too shy to say it."
